L’essai œdométrique analyse la consolidation d’un sol, c’est-à-dire son tassement sous charge. Il évalue le tassement maximal induit par une construction et mesure la vitesse à laquelle l’eau quitte le sol, cause principale du phénomène. L’essai permet ainsi de déterminer la cinétique de tassement et d’estimer le temps nécessaire — quelques mois par exemple — pour atteindre une proportion donnée du tassement final.

The oedometer test examines soil consolidation, meaning settlement under applied loads. It determines the maximum settlement caused by a structure and measures the rate at which water escapes from the soil, driving the process. The test establishes settlement kinetics and estimates the time required—several months, for instance—to reach a given percentage of the final settlement.
