Soil identification tests characterize behaviour through water content and composition. Atterberg limits define liquid, plastic, and solid states using liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index, key parameters for classifying fine soils. Water content is measured from wet and dry masses. Clays, highly sensitive to moisture, undergo swelling and shrinkage. Cohesive soils differ from granular soils, which are analysed through particle-size distribution. For fine particles, sedimentation testing—based on free-settling velocity—produces a granulometric curve relating grain-size distribution to particle diameter. This method, performed over time and influenced by density, viscosity, and temperature, helps determine soil type and interpret its mechanical behaviour for engineering applications.
